First Day of School

Surprisingly, the classroom still looked somewhat like this at the end of the day! It's me versus 25 2nd graders, and on a scale of 1-10, I rated today a 5. I'm very excited though; I know my class is going to be awesome!

Funny story: I am a novelty at school because the kids don't understand how a person not of Spanish-speaking descent ended up teaching a bilingual class. Some of the parents were like to their kids, "Well, I guess they got rid of the bilingual class and you'll be learning a lot more English." Then I opened my mouth and the kids were like, "Whew!" They also loved my "artifact bag" activity--basically you put 4 things that are important to you in the bag and then share them with the class. I can't wait to see what they bring (or not...) :-)

Thanks Modest-goddess! :-)

Everything looks really nice.

But it's a shame that the parents and kids automatically thought that the bilingual class had been cut. It makes me wonder what else that district has been doing that made them expect to have meaningful, relevant educational programming taken away from them.

I'm waiting to see when the parents start trying to see if you're Dominican, Panamanian, or something else ; )

Thanks RVCBard,

It doesn't look like this anymore. :-(

From what I've heard, the school is like a "safe haven" for our parents and families. They face so much general disenfranchisement and other crap outside, but our principal and staff really push the "parents as partners" framework. And I don't even want to get started on the expectations people have for kids from "around here" (that's a post for another time).

Z,

I guess we'll see at the parent workshop next Wednesday. I've only talked to the parents briefly before and after school so far.

I'm happy you liked the first day of school :) Kids are great at that age (their parents might not be, though), but I hope you won't have any problems. You really seem like a person who loves teaching, and I bet you're a good teacher.

Awww, I feel like a kid again just looking at those pictures. :P

LOL Alee, did your school give you a shiny new pencil box, or did they send you home with a list of $50 worth of supplies to buy?

Alee said...

Jasmin, the latter, lol. And you know my parents were all, "You don't need all of that" and just got me pencils and paper. :)

Alee,

Lol my mom always said, "Why does each kid need his own box of crayons anyway?"
