If you haven't noticed, the two pictures of myself that I use around the web (i.e., my profile pic in the right-hand column and my Gravatar commenting picture) are pretty outdated. I'm too lazy to change my profile (I'm not the picture-taking type unless there's a special occasion), and I just like the picture of me and Z. But I just so happened to have a camera and the cord in my purse today, so I finally took (2) pictures. Coincidentally, tomorrow marks 6 months since I Big Chopped (and I didn't even think of that until after I took the pictures). :-)

I'm about to put twists in, so I'll add that pic later (I'm a slow twister, but Z's working late and I don't have anything better to do until he gets home)--most of you East Coasters probably won't see this post until tomorrow anyway. Feel free to share your own hair pictures (or links to your Flickr, blog, etc.) in the comments!

I think we have about the same texture! I'm a new follower, so how long did you transition before you big chopped?

check out my features in the meantime ;)
CC,
That makes you a godsend, because I never find people with my same texture online! :-)
I got my last relaxer in February of 2010, but I don't remember when I actually started transitioning--it's a bit fuzzy when I decided I wasn't going to get relaxers anymore, plus I a) went to college out-of-state and had a stylist back home and b) tended to go at least 8 weeks before getting a touch-up anyway. But I generally say that I transitioned for 10 months before I cut my hair, and I got hair cuts in the interim. I was pretty satisfied with my transition, though compared to all-natural hair it was a pain in the butt!
Lovely texture. I wonder how it will look when it grows out more.
I like the picture of you and Z, so unless you can take another which is as nice, don't change it!
Alee,
Thanks. :-)
I wonder how it will look when it grows out more.
Me too! As it grows longer, my quick ways of stretching/drying (braidouts and twistouts) leave it looking halfway straight, so I'm trying to experiment with ways to incorporate easy styles. (Before, a braidout/twistout was a style, but now I have too much hair to just leave it like that with no pins or clips.) I have what most people would classify as 4A hair (I think)--is this normal as your hair grows longer?
Yup, I'd say you have 4a texture. It is normal for it to appear semi-straight if you braid it; my hair always looked much straighter than it is when I took out braids.
Come to think about it... You hair looks like mine a bit except with slightly less defined curls. Do you have fine, medium, or thick strands? I can't really tell if it's truly like mine since I've never cut my hair.
Alee,
I'm horrible at hair typing--4B/C hair just looks like kinky-textured straight hair to me. (I think it's really pretty, and some days it seems preferable to my head, with random coils popping up all over the place.)
How do you determine strand thickness? I'm known among friends and family for having thick hair, but I don't know if my strands fit the "technical" definition of thick.
How much relaxed hair do you have left? I know mine looked significantly different (for one, it was longer than I expected) when I cut the relaxed ends off. I know some people are "fooled" into thinking they have type 3 hair while transitioning (and disappointed when they cut it off and they don't), but I think my regular hair looks much better than my transitioning. I was thinking of taking some pictures of shed strands and adding them to this post; maybe I'll get on it once I finish filling out all of this paperwork.
I like your curls; they're larger than mine which are more like pen springs.
I don't know how the whole science of determining strand thickness. I just know if your strands are the size of thread that would be considered thick. Fine strands are more like silk in their thickness.
My hair is really thick but the individual strands are fine.
I have about 10 inches of relaxed hair left in some parts! I know my hair type though because I've been natural for most of my life. I've only had a relaxer for a few years, total. I'm no sort of 3. I have 4b near the edges. I agree that it looks like kinky straight hair.
love the texture shot
Alee,
Yea, I only have a couple of pen springs that stick out of my head randomly. The rest of my curls are bigger, so my hair flops down in the shower. (I actually find the flopping really unattractive, but with some patting and shaping I can do a nice wash-n-go.)
My hair is definitely more like thread than silk--individual strands are really visible against a background, and Z had this obsession with picking up individual hairs off of the carpet. :-P
Modest-goddess,
Thanks! Looking at it again, I realize that my hair looks darker in pictures than it is in real life.
Lol @ zek. I used to do the same thing with my sister's hair since the strands were so thick. I called them mutant strands and tried out various ways of snapping them.
Alee,
I like "mutant strands", ha.
